How did the hipster burn his tongue? He ate his food before it was cool!

The food and coffee scene in Dubai has undeniably become a hipster's playground in the last couple of years - especially if you know where to go! From artisan cold brew coffee and build-your-own acai bowl concepts to super trendy food trucks, here are our top 10 favourite hipster hangouts in Dubai and what we're ordering from the menu at each.

  1. The Espresso Lab

What it is: No one takes their coffee quite as seriously as hipsters so we have to start this list off with artisan cafe specializing in some of the finest coffee Dubai as to offer.
Where it is: The Hundred Wellness Centre, Street 53B, Jumeirah 1.
What we're ordering: Coffee. Because that's pretty much all they serve.

  2. One Cafe

What it is: Vegan cuisine has taken a serious hipster turn in recent years - whether you're actually vegan or not, ordering a giant chia pudding for breakfast in a super zen and hippy setting is an undeniably hipster move. This hippy cafe in Jumeirah serves 100% vegan food.
Where it is: Life'n One, Jumeirah Beach Road, 27 B Street.
What we're ordering: The vegan omelette! Made with chickpea flour, you won't find this item on any other menus in town.

  3. Wild and the Moon

What it is: Wild and the Moon is like an Instagram feed you almost want to hate. It's healthy food taken to a whole new level of health so unless you speak the language, you might get a bit lost in a menu of sprouted almonds, spirulina, reishi and chaga. But we're sure their staff are happy to explain.
Where it is: Alserkal Avenue, Street 8, H-77.
What we're ordering: As interesting as a nutshake with activated charcoal sounds, we'll probably stick to one of their delicious raw vegan desserts.

  4. Muchachas

Muchachas is arguably the most hipster-looking restaurant in Dubai right now. The Mexican catina not only has kitchy and minimalist decor full of pastel shades and pineapples that's real a treat for the eyes, it's got a fantastically vegetarian-friendly menu too.
Where it is: Holiday Inn Express Safa Park, Al Safa (04) 327 5878.
What we're ordering: The charred corn tacos with braised black bean and avocado come served in a porcelain chihuahua which is just screaming out for an Instagram post.

  5. Balls You Can Eat

What it is: Balls You Can Eat is the coolest new food truck to pop-up in Dubai, serving nothing but their spin on Italian arancini (if you're Sicilian) or suppli (if you're Roman). And as we all know, there's nothing more hipster than an eatery that specializes in just one thing. Suppli (I'm Roman) were invented as a means to use up leftover rice -a ball of rice in tomato sauce stuffed with a bit of mozzarella, rolled up breadcrumbs then fried. But at Balls You Can Eat, there's more than just mozzarella on the menu.
Where it is: It's a food truck, so to keep up with it's location follow it on Instagram or Facebook.
What we're ordering: There's a good handful of vegetarian balls - like their 'mac and cheese'  or 'provolone and porcini'. And we're impressed to learn they even have a vegan and gluten-free version that tastes like the real deal.

  6. Tom & Serg

What it is: With it's kitschy decor, artsy Al Quoz location and haute cafe fare, Tom & Serg is hipster paradise.
Where it is: Al-Joud Center, 15A Street, Al Qouz.
What we're ordering: Pop down for brunch and order their take on Indonesian gado - a free range fried egg on quinoa, zucchini, eggplant with silken tofu, bok choy and their signature gado sauce.

  7. Il Donaccino
hipster dubaiWhat it is: Remember how we said vegan has become hipster? Well, nothing is more hipster than veganising traditionally unvegan food. Sure, a big vegan salad is great but vegan burgers take it to another level. That's why we're loving Il Donaccino - Dubai's only vegan-friendly donut shop!
Where it is: JLT, Cluster D.
What we're ordering: Everything! Seriously, nothing on this menu doesn't not look good! They even have savory donuts if sweet isn't your thing.
  8. Wanna Banana

What it is: To anyone unfamiliar with one-ingredient ice-cream - it's a thing! The smart people at Wanna Banana have capitalized on the world's easiest and healthiest snack and are serving up  blended banana ice-cream all day at Kite Beach.
Where it is: Kite Beach: 2D Street, Umm Suqeim 4. Or Sports City: Shop No.9, Mediterranean Bldg.
What we're ordering: The ice-cream with chocolate or date syrup and some yummy toppings like peanut butter and oat crunch!

  9. Stomping Grounds

What it is: Another super cute hipster-esque cafe, specializing in artisan coffee and everyone's favourite meal - brunch!
Where it is: Kite Beach: 2D Street, Umm Suqeim 4. Or Sports City: Shop No.9, Mediterranean Bldg.
What we're ordering: We're loving the build your own brekkie - nothing says hipster like customizing how you eat your eggs!

  10. Last Exit

What it is: If food trucks are hipster then Last Exit is off the charts. This food truck park is the ultimate chilled out food experience where you can eat from a whole range of delicious street food!
Where it is: Just after interchange 11, direction Dubai.
What we're ordering: Operation Falafel never fails. And neither do the quesadillas and tacos that Poco Loco are serving up.

  11. The Surf Cafe

What it is: This surf shack style cafe encourages its patrons to rock up in flip-flops. They serve up speciality coffee, all day breakfasts and sushi with no shortage of avocado as well as an impressive range of fully loaded salads.
Where it is: Kite Beach: 2D Street, Umm Suqeim 4. Or Sports City: Shop No.9, Mediterranean Bldg.
What we're ordering: The build-your-own acai bowl has to be one of the most deliciously hipster things we've heard of in a while!
