As 2016, with all it's cauliflower carbs and bento lunch boxes, grinds to a close there are new food trends that are already circling our feeds, poised to explode in 2017. It's quite a veg-friendly affair as the Millenial Instagram-using generation continue to up their vegetable intake (to lower their meat intake) and use only the most colorful and photogenic foods possible. #NoFilter necessary when your plate is a rainbow.

  1. Purple Reign, Purple Reign

Yes that's right, there's more purple food out there than just cabbage! According to Whole Foods Market's predictions for 2017 food trends - Get ready to see a lot more purple with purple cauliflower, purple sweet potato, purple asparagus, purple corn and purple carrots becoming the hot food items. And before you ask, they're 100% natural varieties of the plants so nothing has been modified or dyed.

  2. Still Loco for Coco

The coconut craze is going nowhere. In 2017, we'll be graduating from coconut oil and coconut water into the world of coconut flour (used in the coconut tortillas pictured above), coconut chips, coconut ice cream, coconut butters and much more.

  3. Chronic tonics

Wellness tonics will be flying off the shelves in 2017! But you won't have to fork out the big bucks to get on that bandwagon, as you can easily make your own. Try an anti-inflammatory turmeric tonic wellness shot or a super detoxifying apple cider vinegar and cayenne pepper tonic.

  4. Pasta La Vista

What's a more universally adored dish than pasta? Next year, expect pasta to get a little edge as the popularity of alternative-grain pastas climb. From quinoa macaroni to black bean spaghetti, there's no shortage of grains, beans and seeds that pasta can be made from.

  5. Condiment Creativity

One of the last food trends to kick off in 2016 are some seriously creative condiments. The meal additions will be taking center stage next year with concoctions like spicy and sweet habanero jam to black tahini and black garlic paste popping up in restaurants everywhere.

  6. Seaweed Snacks

Forget nibbling on chips to fend off your 4pm hunger pangs, the big thing next year is gonna be seaweed snacks. Not only will roasted seaweed sheets satisfy your craving for something salty and crunchy, they are full of all the nutrients that only sea vegetables can provide. In fact, it's one of the only natural, non-animal sources of vitamin B-12, which is essential for many cognitive and bodily functions!

Other trends to keep your eyes peeled for: vegetable-infused yoghurt, watermelon water (thanks Beyonce!) and Poke bowls.
