Just when you thought the gold flake cappuccinos, gold cocktails, and the recent opening of the 24 Karat restaurant had finally put the gold-eating trend to bed, suddenly Dubai won't stop talking about that gold leaf burger bun. The aptly named Burg-Khalifa by The Roadery will be making its debut at Eat The World DXB festival which is rolling into town February 23-25. For what will no doubt be the most expensive item at the festival, this extravagant display of five beef patties held in place between two sides of an edible 24-carat gold leaf brioche bun will set you back AED 230.

Are we missing something here? When did gold become appetizing? I can't say my mouth has ever watered as I strolled through the Gold Souk. Here at Veggiebuzz HQ, we're way more interested in talking about the other burger bun that's been blowing up on social media. And after all, avocados are a girl's best friend! (And, recently, pretty much as expensive as gold too).

The trend coincides with the news that The Avocado Show Cafe, the world's first avocado-only restaurant, is set to open in Amsterdam next month - promising avocado burger buns amongst a menu of avocado toast and guacamole!

Because let's be honest: all that glitters is not gold, not when your digestive system is involved anyway. While gold is chemically inert and simply passes through the system without being absorbed into the body, munching on an avocado bun is going to provide you with all the good nutrients, vitamins and antioxidants that have turned a whole peer group of savvy millennials into what is now being referred to as: "The Smashed Avocado Generation".

It's got us dreaming of even more possible combinations: Asian-style burgers drizzled in peanut sauce... Mexican inspired black bean patties with salsa... hearty sweet potato and chickpea concoctions... because honestly what doesn't avocado go with?
