Best Post-Workout Foods
A good workout is just one part of being fit. If you want to keep your energy levels up and maintain a steady routine, you need to eat right as well. Here are some of the best post-workout foods to really make that gym session count for something.
Hummus
Chickpeas are a great source of protein and carbohydrates. Combined with some whole grain bread (such as pita), hummus is a good pick-me-up after an exhausting exercise routine.
Dried Fruits & Nuts
Nuts are another protein source (and perhaps a bit more portable than hummus), while dried fruits take care of the carbohydrate intake. You could even try a slice of wholegrain bread or a wholegrain bagel with nut butter.
Egg Whites
The protein content in eggs is very high, but the type of protein found in eggs is also used very efficiently by the body. An egg white omelet or even scrambled whites will have you ready for round two in no time.
Green Juices/Smoothies
Dark greens such as spinach and kale contain essential minerals such as iron and potassium that can keep the muscles pumping. A simple salad (sprinkled with some nuts and a light olive oil dressing) works great, or combine a few ingredients into a refreshing smoothie.
Chocolate Milk
Those of you who are kids at heart can rejoice: chocolate milk might just be the best thing to have after a workout! It hydrates the body just as well as any sports drink, and also packs in calcium and whey protein.
Sweet Potatoes
Carbohydrates help to build up the energy reserves so you can be ready for your next workout, and sweet potatoes are perhaps the best source of plant-based carbohydrates you can find. They also contain plenty of fiber so you’ll feel full longer.
Avocados
We know that avocadoes are just bursting with all sorts of health benefits, and are especially good for the heart. The healthy fats contained in these green dynamos also help in the recovery of muscles and joints, and help to absorb minerals faster.
Cereal
Whole grains can fulfill your protein and carb requirements, and also contain other necessary vitamins and minerals. A bowl of whole grain cereal with milk (or chocolate milk, even) is as good as any energy bar, if not better.
