Clinton Street, yay or nay?

New York City's Clinton Street Baking Company landed in Dubai a few months ago, and thankfully its vegetarian friendly! Previously, brunch in Dubai was synonymous with lots of champagne and buffet style meals in various hotels around town. It wasn’t really about the food, and certainly not the vegetarian food. What Dubai really needed, was a good old fashioned American brunch, with eggs, pancakes, French toast and the works. Clinton Street is amongst the first few to create this trendy new brunch scene in Dubai, and frankly, I really hope to see more of it.

When VeggieBuzz asked Hisham Samawi, one of the owners of Clinton Street Dubai how vegetarian friendly the restaurant was, he mentioned that about 75% of the dishes on the menu are either vegetarian or can be made vegetarian with a few minor substitutions.  And he was right, which I confirmed when I read over the menu on my visit there last weekend.  Incidentally, he also mentioned that every ingredient used in the restaurant is 100% organic.

Of course the majority of the sweet breakfast dishes are vegetarian and very popular even among the meat eaters, and I noticed most of the patrons had at least one of the sweet breakfast dishes on their table.  My table was debating between the light and fluffy blueberry pancakes or the brioche French toast, served with caramelized bananas, roasted pecans and warm maple butter, and lightly dusted with powdered sugar.  We ended up going with the French toast which was chunky, rich in flavour, and of course, hard to resist!

For those customers that don't eat egg, there are also a lot of options like the vegetarian taco, the vegetarian sandwich, the granola, and the quinoa and kale salad.  For egg eaters, one of the favourites is the Eggs Benedict Florentine served with spinach, artichoke and a lemon hollandaise.  My personal favourite is the Huevos Rancheros, eggs typically served sunny side up on hot corn tortillas, and topped with red beans, guacamole, jalapeno, sour cream, salsa picante and pepper jack cheese, which is what I ordered on my last visit.  Since I am not a big fan of runny eggs, they were happy to substitute these with eggs over hard.  I like the fact that Clinton Street is flexible with substitutions, which is not the case at some of the other brunch places in town.

The French toast and eggs were the perfect balance of sweet and savoury, so together with the bottomless coffee, I was left satisfied for the day.

If you are worried about the long lines, don't.  On each of my visits there, my table was ready much sooner than the estimated wait time, and there are plenty of delicious baked goods that can be sampled and ordered at the counter while you wait.

In short, veggiebuzz says yay!  What do you think?  Feel free to share your thoughts below...
