They say an apple a day keeps the doctor away but in actual fact, it's more likely to keep the dentist away. If you dread sitting in that dentist chair or if you just want to keep your pearly whites gleaming, incorporate more 'detergent food' into your diet. Detergent foods are the closest you can get to brushing your teeth without actually brushing your teeth and should be the last piece of food you consume during a meal in order for them to really work. They are usually foods that are firm, crunchy and crispy which lets them act like a brush on and around your teeth to bring your mouth's pH back to an optimal 7.0.
Here are some detergent foods you should sneak into your diet for a healthier mouth:
- Celery
- Apples
- Popcorn
- Carrots
- Cucumbers
- Pears
- Lettuce
- Cheese
But keeping your mouth healthy is more than just snacking on celery sticks. Just as you should incorporate more detergent foods, there are foods that will seriously detriment your oral hygiene and it's more than the obvious sugary sweets and soft drinks that you've always known to avoid. In fact, even carbohydrates like bread, chips, crackers and dried provide will provide the bacteria in your mouth with the sugar it needs to create an acidic environment and increase the your chances of cavities and decay.
