Waking Up to Crumble

Singapore has developed a thriving café culture over the years, with a strong focus on finding the right balance between good food and a great atmosphere to create a pleasurable dining experience. In 2004, Crumble Café was born as a representation of that culture, and went on to open over 130 outlets around the world. Recently, Crumble opened its doors in Dubai, a city with a vibrant café culture of its own. It’s conveniently located next to the Burj Khalifa Metro Station, so with that in mind, we thought we’d try out their breakfast selection and see if it was worth adding Crumble as a stop on the morning commute.

With wooden tables, a brick wall at one end of the café and hanging light bulbs, Crumble has an old-school industrial look to it, which adds a bit of charm to the simple environment. Glass walls afford a view of the busy Sheikh Zayed Road, letting you watch the world zoom past as you unwind over a cup of coffee.

I start off with a latte to wake up my senses, and order a mix of savory and sweet breakfast items. The first ones to arrive are the Skillet Baked Eggs and the Smashed Avocado.

The eggs sit on top of a bed of spinach, with Greek yogurt generously spread along the side of the pan. While the combination of eggs and spinach is delicious, the yogurt proves to be a bit much, adding an overly sour note to the dish.

The Smashed Avocado is served on toasted sour dough bread and accompanied by buffalo mozzarella, semi dried tomatoes and a truffle balsamic glaze. There isn’t a single ingredient there that I don’t enjoy. The avocado is creamy and slightly sweet, balanced perfectly by the crunchy sour dough. The mozzarella adds a mild, rich element that’s counteracted by the tart tomato, and the balsamic sauce drizzled over it ties everything up with a neat, aromatic bow.

Next up is Coconut Quinoa Porridge. It’s made with almond milk and has blueberry and banana pieces, almonds and chia seeds in it too, so it’s a complete breakfast all on its own! The coconut flavor is very subtle and almost hard to detect at the beginning, but becomes evident after a few spoonfuls and brings a wonderfully refreshing taste to the dish. It’s a bit heavy when combined with the rest of my order, but a bowl of porridge by itself will easily keep you satisfied until lunchtime.

I take a little break to sip my coffee. The place starts to fill up as the morning wears on, but it’s still fairly quiet, which I’m thankful for. After a while I turn my attention to my last dish of the morning: Waffles topped with cream cheese, vanilla beans, sliced strawberries and a berry sauce. The waffles are perfectly fluffy, and all the flavors work very well together. There’s not much more I can say about this dish except that it’s delicious.

The breakfast selection at Crumble is both delicious and quite hearty. There are plenty of healthy options such as the quinoa porridge or oatmeal with cacao nibs and figs, and their almond milk and bread is freshly made in-house, which is always a plus. Crumble will definitely start the day off on a satisfying note. And late risers need not worry; breakfast is served until 12:30, so there’s no rush to get out of bed!
