Vegetarian favorites at Zuma

I always jump at the chance for a meal at Zuma; I just love the vibe and energy about the place, especially in the lounge. So whenever a friend is up for it, I'm there! As a result, I’ve literally tried every vegetarian dish on their menu (there are a lot), but for some reason, I’ve never gotten around to posting anything on VeggieBuzz!

I was back at the restaurant catching up with a close friend over dinner the other night, and I noticed some new additions to the menu. Four new seasonal dishes, 2 of which are vegetarian! Of course, I had to try them both to keep up with my track record. The roasted leeks were good, but boy I could not stop raving about the Tomato Tartare! So I figured it was time to get my Zuma post done.

FINAL6

The décor, vibe and ambiance at Zuma need no introduction, so I’ll just do a quick rundown of my favourite veggie dishes. Coming from someone who has tried them all, you may find it useful. So whether you’re a vegetarian looking for guidance, or a meat lover with some vegetarian guests to entertain, your expert veggie guide to Zuma is finally here! smile emoticon

Zuma-Tomato-Tartare

To start:

Tomato & myoga tartare with picked eggplant (seasonal)
(vegan friendly)
If you’re a lover of Zuma’s signature salmon and tuna tartare, then this will look familiar, except this version is entirely veggie! The tartare is super fresh and juicy with hints of Japanese ginger, so it’s a perfect light dish for the summer. It’s served alongside some crispy rice crackers for dipping and garnished with sea grapes that resemble caviar!

Snacks:

Spinach, chestnut and date gyoza with wafu dressing
(vegan friendly)
These Japanese dumplings have just the right amount of sweetness from the dates, which is nicely offset by the deliciously umami wafu dressing that is added generously to the plate. The dish is balanced out with a bit of spice from its garnish of dried chili and spring onion.

Salads:
Spicy fried tofu, avocado and Japanese herbs
(vegan friendly)
The lightly breaded exterior has a touch of spice to reveal the soft tofu, and the avocado salad on the side is a nice touch.

Steamed Japanese spinach with sesame sauce
(vegan friendly)
The sesame sauce used in this dish is fantastic, so I’d also highly recommend it as a delicious side for the meat-eaters. Be warned, you may need seconds!

Hot dishes:

Roasted whole potato with shiso chilli ponzu butter and lime
The baked potato arrives at your table nice and hot, and your server typically adds the toppings on the spot. The soft potato literally melts in your mouth with the delicious citrus flavoured buttery sauce that brings with it a lovely vinegary punch. You’ll be reaching for more straight away.

Japanese sweetcorn
The glaze on the corn (served on the cob) has much the same flavours as the roasted potato mentioned above, but the differing texture of the corn makes it distinctive enough to order both dishes.

Japanese mushroom rice hotpot
A wholesome, earthy rice pot for mushroom lovers or those that need a more substantial main course to add to the mix.  It comes with summer truffles when they are in season.

Desserts:

Green tea and Banana Cake
This one definitely ranks high on my dessert list for Dubai, so it’s a must order if you like bananas. The cake is served with a side of coconut ice cream and a rich toffee sauce.

Special chocolate with vanilla bean ice cream
I don’t usually go for chocolate desserts if there are other interesting options on the menu, but I do at Zuma. It’s one of my favourite chocolate fondants in Dubai and I rarely see one unfinished. It has the perfect texture, the right amount of sweetness, and the caramel sauce oozes out without fail every time!
