Anyone who has been to a health food cafe recently has no doubt seen someone sipping from a curious cup of frothy green liquid. From models bringing it by the jar-full to pilates class to chefs sneaking it into everything they can (even brownies!), the world has truly gone mad for matcha. But what exactly is matcha green tea and how is it better than regular green tea?

Matcha is a powdered green tea and while it may have been discovered by the health food community very recently, it actually dates back to 8th century Japanese tea ceremonies.

Here are five reasons why this bright green powder has been introduced to the rest of the world as a bonafide superfood:

  1. It's a fat burner! Even more than regular green tea, matcha green tea revs up your metabolism through a process called thermogenesis which may help your body burn fat up to four times as fast.
  2. It'll make you calm and happy! L-theanine is a compound that increases serotonin and dopamine in the brain (those are the feel good hormones!).  While L-theanine is present in regular green tea, it is five times higher in matcha!
  3. It's antioxidant rich! One cup of organic matcha tea has ten times the antioxidants compared with green tea.
  4. It has anti-stress effects on our skin as well as our brains. When we feel stressed out, we produce a hormone called cortisol which gives us inflamed, irritated and sensitive skin. Matcha's high levels of l-theanine have similar calming efforts on our skin as they do our brains.
  5. It may even be anti-cancerous! Perhaps the most impressive perk of them all, matcha green tea contains compounds called catechins which can cut your risk of cancer in half!
