Jumeirah Beach Residence was a pretty decent place to spend a weekend afternoon once upon a time. You could go for a swim, take a walk along the beach or head over to one of a handful of restaurants for lunch. However, with recent developments over the past couple of years with the addition of the cinema, ample underground parking, the running track, clothing stores and lots and lots of eateries to choose from, it has become a much more popular destination for tourists and local residents alike!

As the temperature keeps rising and summer gets nearer, the next couple of weeks are probably your last chance to head to “The Beach” and enjoy the fantastic atmosphere at “The Walk.” Whether you’re looking for a break from a tanning session or an evening stroll, or just want to grab a bite after catching a movie, JBR has some great choices!

Here are our picks for some of our favorite JBR eateries!

  1. Sushi Art

This fun little sushi bar has a cozy atmosphere, with hanging lantern-like chandeliers and a rustic looking long wooden table. There’s also a pretty decent selection of vegetarian sushi options.

We found ourselves partial to the Vegetarian and the Maki Like Tabouleh, which boosted the subtle flavor of sushi with some fresh herbs and veggies. A lot of the rolls use cucumber and avocado, giving them a nice freshness, and overall experience makes for a nice light meal.

  1. Operation: Falafel

The mission at Operation: Falafel is clear. They want to serve up tasty street food in a casual atmosphere that anyone can enjoy, and we certainly feel that their mission has been accomplished. The falafels, available on their own or in a sandwich, are wonderfully crisp and some of the tastiest you’ll find in town. The Fiery Falafel Sandwich has a nice kick without being too spicy, and it’s a tasty variation on an old classic.

If you’re still craving more heat, order a side of Spicy Potatoes, and wash it all down with a refreshing lemon mint juice.

  1. House of Curry

While it might be a bit much for a day at the beach, House of Curry is great for an indulgent dinner after catching a movie. The décor evokes rural India with a bit of a twist (like the sari-clad Mona Lisa), and they’ve got some great drinks to cool off, such as the Indian Summer, a lemonade spiced with cumin, and a relatively light Mango Lassi.

The appetizers, such as hot and spicy potatoes, assorted fritters and samosas, are great for sharing. It goes without saying that the curries are delicious; we love the Palak Paneer, Mirchi ka Salan and a creamy Black Daal Makhni.

  1. The Counter

This isn’t the first time The Counter’s made one of our lists. Their build-your-own-burger concept lets you experiment and come up with your own combination of delicious toppings, sauces and buns. They have a great Vegan Veggie patty that can be dressed up however you want (check our feature on veggie burgers for our recommended sauces).

As we’d mentioned last time, the sweet potato fries and crispy onion strings are perfect accompaniments to your burger. You can also build your own smoothie or milk shake, so pretty much the whole meal is entirely in your hands. Just try not to go crazy with the toppings!

  1. El Chico

The warm-hued interiors and hanging sombreros at El Chico will transport you to a cantina in the Old West. Start things off by ordering the Top Shelf Guacamole, a live guacamole preparation station that’s sure to get your mouth watering!

There’s also a pretty good main course selection, with veggie quesadillas, burritos and fajitas. One of our favorites is the Mexican Chile Relleno, a pair of battered poblano peppers stuffed with mashed potatoes and served with spicy Mexican rice, steamed vegetables and zesty Ranchero sauce.

  1. Margherita

Margherita is an elegant looking café with tastefully decorated interiors and polished dark wood furniture, which adds a touch of refinement to a casual dinner outing. It’s no surprise that there is a nice assortment of vegetarian appetizers and mains, such as Classica Bruschette, Minestrone Soup and Ravioli with Sage and Brown Butter.

Have a little fun at the end of the meal as your waiter asks you to pick a number from 1 to 90. He’ll pull out a numbered ball from a jar, and if it matches the number you picked, the meal’s on the house!

  1. Busaba Eathai

Busaba Eathai is a bit hidden away on one side of the Beach, but this Thai eatery (near Anwaj Rotana) is worth it. The interiors are simple but inviting, and the food is delicious, using authentic Thai recipes that have been given a slight modern twist.

Pad Thai Jay has a wonderful umami flavor with a touch of sweetness, and the Butternut Pumpkin Curry is a big bowl of comfort with hints of coconut. Be sure to try their drinks, with elements of ginger and citrus that add a refreshing tropical twist to lunch at the beach.

Many other popular restaurants such as Carluccio’s, P.F. Chang’s and The Cheesecake Factory have also set up shop at the JBR Walk, so there’s really no shortage of choices!

If you’re not quite looking for a meal, there are also juice bars and ice cream shops (of course!) that’ll help you stay cool. So the next time you’re heading to the beach with family or friends, take a little Walk and discover some delicious treats.
